Inclusion Beyond SEND is a one-day conference exploring AT, AI, skills and the future of access to learning . Taking place at the University of Surrey, Guildford , on Thursday 17th September 2026 , the event brings together education, SEND, assistive technology, inclusive AI, curriculum, careers, widening participation and future pathways. The central question for the day is: How do we design access, confidence and independence into learning from the start, rather than adding support later? Explore and understand the challenge of increasing school absence for disadvantaged pupils, those with SEND, and those known to children’s social care. You will come away ready to implement new ideas and proven strategies in your school. This year, almost two in five disadvantaged pupils (37.9 per cent) were persistently absent. This is also double the rate for their better-off peers. Similar statistics apply to those with SEND and those known to children’s social care. This means the attendance gap has widened by 6.7 percentage points, rising from 14.5 per cent in pre-pandemic 2018-19 to 21.2 per cent this year. This online session has been designed to help school leaders identify the causes and consequences of differences and disadvantages and put in place proven strategies to help improve attendance and outcomes for those learners.

A hands-on Science of Reading workshop with Doug Lemov, focused on strengthening reading comprehension and close reading for Grades 3–12. This workshop is designed to support teachers and school leaders in deepening their understanding of the Science of Reading and, crucially, in turning that research into classroom practice that is intentional, coherent, and effective. While awareness of the Science of Reading has grown rapidly, many educators are still grappling with how to apply the research in ways that genuinely improve student understanding. This session bridges that gap, connecting evidence to pedagogy and curriculum so that reading instruction leads to meaningful, lasting learning.

With ongoing SEND reform, the Schools White Paper, and increasing expectations around inclusion and system-wide standards, the role of alternative provision is increasingly in the spotlight. Alongside this, significant government investment, including £860 million funding for 2026–27 to support the creation of around 11,000 new SEND and alternative provision places as part of a wider programme to deliver 60,000 specialist places, is reshaping the landscape of provision. Providers are under growing pressure to deliver impactful, tailored support for children and young people with complex needs, while clearly evidencing progress and outcomes. Nearly four in ten (37%) children will need additional support with learning at some point in their education (Nuffield Foundation 2025) Since 2020, there has been a 30.2% increase in placements in alternative provision (Department for Education 2025) The Alternative Provision Conference 2026: Connecting Policy, Practice and Progress will bring together leaders and practitioners from across education and local government to explore the latest policies and priorities shaping the future of AP. Focusing on policy developments, inclusive practice, and system-wide improvement, the conference will provide a platform to share evidence-based approaches that drive engagement, raise standards, and strengthen outcomes. Through expert insights and practical case studies, attendees will examine key priorities including the recent SEND reform, safeguarding for complex needs and effective accountability frameworks. This one-day event explores how inclusive teaching is built through responsive classroom practice, using the powerful combination of Teaching WalkThrus techniques and Formative Action Loops. Drawing on the work of Tom Sherrington (Teaching WalkThrus, @teacherhead) and Valentina Devid (The Formative Action School, Toets Revolutie), participants will examine how effective teaching involves a continuous cycle of orientating learners, generating evidence of learning, evaluating understanding, taking action and verifying success.
