Artificial intelligence is accelerating change across higher education, challenging established assumptions about teaching, assessment, expertise, and the value of a university education. As new models of learning emerge, what should the university of the future look like? Invitation to the Sustainability in Higher Education Conference | 21 - 23 September 2026 | Berlin We are delighted to invite you to our conference “Sustainability in Higher Education – Between Transformation and Vibe Shifts”, which will take place from 21 - 23 September 2026 at Freie Universitaet Berlin, in collaboration with Una Europa. Following a Whole Institution Approach, the conference aims to critically examine the current status of sustainability in higher education, tracing how the rhetoric of “transformation” has given way to more complex modes of negotiation, adaptation, and resilience. The program offers a self-reflective engagement with the role of science communication and higher education institutions in advancing climate action, fostering biodiversity, and social responsibility. On Tuesday and Wednesday (September 22-23), we will continue with 6 workshops, which will present ongoing research and institutional activities, providing a platform for dialog on how universities can embed sustainability more deeply within their structures. Explore and understand the challenge of increasing school absence for disadvantaged pupils, those with SEND, and those known to children’s social care. You will come away ready to implement new ideas and proven strategies in your school. This year, almost two in five disadvantaged pupils (37.9 per cent) were persistently absent. This is also double the rate for their better-off peers. Similar statistics apply to those with SEND and those known to children’s social care. This means the attendance gap has widened by 6.7 percentage points, rising from 14.5 per cent in pre-pandemic 2018-19 to 21.2 per cent this year. This online session has been designed to help school leaders identify the causes and consequences of differences and disadvantages and put in place proven strategies to help improve attendance and outcomes for those learners.

Changes in higher education, academic and financial pressures, uncertainty, and an unpredictable job market are intensifying pressures on students, making mental health and wellbeing more critical than ever. Despite growing awareness, NHS mental health services remain under immense pressure, leading to additional strain on Higher Education Providers (HEPs) (Department for Education, 2026). A multi-agency reformed approach is crucial to confront mental health challenges and prioritise effective care pathways from early intervention to crisis, otherwise risking worsening student wellbeing, and fragmented support. With major UK reforms underway to address student mental health, it is essential that student support teams stay informed about government initiatives to avoid unsustainable or outdated practices. Now is the time to align strategies, build sustainable partnerships and ensure students have access to the right care and the right support. The Student Mental Health and Wellbeing Conference 2026 examines the latest government initiatives tackling the rising challenge of student mental health and explores the obstacles faced by service providers at leading universities. It highlights practical solutions for delivering effective support and offers clear guidance on next steps to strengthen student support pathways.

A hands-on Science of Reading workshop with Doug Lemov, focused on strengthening reading comprehension and close reading for Grades 3–12. This workshop is designed to support teachers and school leaders in deepening their understanding of the Science of Reading and, crucially, in turning that research into classroom practice that is intentional, coherent, and effective. While awareness of the Science of Reading has grown rapidly, many educators are still grappling with how to apply the research in ways that genuinely improve student understanding. This session bridges that gap, connecting evidence to pedagogy and curriculum so that reading instruction leads to meaningful, lasting learning.
