Developing key skills: Effective enrichment in secondary schools

The Brilliant Club

This best practice webinar considered practical ideas for academic enrichment activities in secondary schools that develop key skills and effectively prepare students for higher education. Hosted by SecEd in partnership with our friends at The Brilliant Club , our expert panel identified the skills that are most important for further and higher education and the modern workplace before discussing how enrichment activities and learning beyond the curriculum can teach and enhance these skills. We considered skills including critical-thinking, independent learning, self-efficacy, oracy, and other so-called “soft skills” that are vital to student progression and outcomes. The webinar considered how enrichment activities can target disadvantaged students, including Pupil Premium, and open opportunities. We then drew on the experience and lessons learned from The Brilliant Club’s work with schools (the education charity works with almost 900 schools and 20,000 students a year). The webinar also considered the forthcoming curriculum reforms. The Department for Education, in its response to the Curriculum and Assessment Review, has confirmed it will be working “on the development of a new set of benchmarks, to set out the steps every school and college can take to provide every child with access to a strategically planned and ambitious enrichment offer”. Ofsted will also be taking account of these benchmarks once they have been developed. As such, we discussed what we might expect from these benchmarks, the tenets of an effective enrichment programme, and what schools need to consider to ensure their offer to students is broad, balanced and ultimately effective.

The Currency of Listening is a UK-wide listening programme bringing together teachers, school and college leaders, parents, practitioners, communities and young people to explore the realities of financial education in practice. Rather than arriving with predetermined answers, this event is about listening first: understanding lived experience; exploring challenges and opportunities; identifying what is working well; and helping ensure future curriculum, policy and support are grounded in real-world need.

Children and Childhoods Conference 2026

University of Suffolk

We are excited to announce the seventh biennial Children and Childhoods Conference! Building on a successful legacy, the Children and Childhoods Conference theoretically and empirically engages with children’s lives, across disciplines, to reflect the diverse nature of contemporary childhoods. We continue to uphold our inclusive ethos and aim to bring together academics, pedagogues, practitioners, policymakers, early career and postgraduate researchers and students. DAY 1 Crime, Risk, Safeguarding and Social Harm Day One focuses on how children and young people encounter, navigate, and are shaped by systems of crime, justice, safeguarding, and social regulation. We welcome theoretical, empirical and practice-based contributions that critically engage with issues such as but not limited to: youth justice, safeguarding and protection, children’s rights, social harm, marginalisation, family and community contexts, lived experiences of adversity, risk and resilience, and professional or institutional responses. Interdisciplinary approaches especially those drawing from criminology, childhood and youth studies, social work, education, sociology, psychology, and law are strongly encouraged. DAY 2 Childhoods at Crossroads Day Two contextualises childhoods on the edge in global perspectives of childhoods lived in an era of intensifying childhood poverty, political instability and rapid technological change. Prolonged stagnation in global economic development has contributed to rising unemployment and a widening cost-of-living crisis, both of which have intensified childhood poverty in many regions. International, regional and domestic political instability—together with outbreaks of violence—has directly and often lethally affected children and young people, inflicting lasting harm on their families, physical safety, and psychological well-being. A more detailed agenda will be provided closer to the conference.

Rethinking Education Conference

Teach Connect

Over the last 6 years, the Rethinking Education Conference has examined how earning happens and how it must evolve—through competency-based approaches, digital transformation, learner empowerment, leadership development, and child development. In 2026, the conversation hits a critical turning point, with a focus on coherent learning systems with the theme: From Pedagogic Innovations to Impact: Building Coherent Learning Systems for Skills Development Across the world, education systems are rich in initiatives - but poor in alignment. Innovation has outpaced coherence. Pilots have multiplied, yet impact remains uneven and fragile. This conference invites researchers, educators, system leaders, policymakers, and practitioners to move beyond isolated reforms and engage with a central challenge: How do we design, align, and sustain learning systems that genuinely support skills development at scale? We invite abstracts that explore: - System coherence across curriculum, pedagogy, assessment, and technology - Translating educational innovation into measurable, sustained impact - Teacher and leadership capacity as system infrastructure - Skills development in digitally mediated systems - Policy, governance, and financing for integrated learning systems - African and global perspectives on system-level education reform - Evidence-based models that connect learning to life outcomes Day 0 29 July Pre-conference Dinner and Networking Day 1 30 July Demonstrations and Workshop Day 2 31 July Academic Presentations Day 3 1 August Roundtable Discussions and Reflections
